Let me start by saying that if you go to Santorini in the wintertime, you will have one of the most beautiful places in the world pretty much to yourself. That being said, almost everything will be closed and all the natives will ask why in the world you traveled there in winter. We got quite acquainted with the three other tourists on the island. If that's ok with you, then I advise you to get your butt over to Santorini, because well, the pictures will say it all.
Animal cruelty, I know. But when this cute old man came trotting down the road with his donkeys, I just couldn't help it. He's been doing this job for 50 years!
A few days after Thanksgiving, we traveled a bit farther east. Like, to Europe. We flew into Amsterdam on our way to Greece, and let me tell you. I was pretty excited about stopping in Amsterdam, if only for a short layover. But by the time we got there it was, I don't know, sometime in the middle of the night for us and I was tired. Tired, and sick from eating sketchy airplane food. So we got off our plane, rushed to our gate, and Jon asked if I would go grab a water. When they wouldn't give me a free cup of water, I just walked away exhasperated. Jon suggested that I just shell out the 2 euro for the water bottle, and in my state of delerium, that just threw me over the edge. I'm pretty sure I even shed a tear. Not one of my prouder moments. And that was Amsterdam!
But things were looking up for me after the 3 hours of rest on our next flight, and by the time we landed in Athens, I was a much jollier person. Jon spent two years living in Athens in his early twenties, and I was super excited to explore it with him. I purposely didn't plan much for this part of the trip because I wanted him to show me all the places that were important to him. Having my own private tour guide was awesome. And to hear him speak Greek! (...which he otherwise never does for me.) That was pretty darn cool.
